Pipe Major John Sullivan
 |
In 1991, amid his successful solo career, he decided to return to his roots and reformed the Rhode Island
Highlanders Pipe Band where he had played as a child. After finishing the 1997 solo season ranked 3rd nationally,
he opted to devote his full focus to the band. During his 14 years as Pipe Major, the band experienced great growth
and success as they moved from being simply a street band to being a winning competition group.
The Highlanders won many prizes, including the Loon Mt. Pipe Band Championships, the Hunter Mountain Mt. Pipe
Band Championships, and Northeastern US Pipe Band Championships. The band was named the EUSPBA Champions for
Grade 4 in 2000. Then, in 2002, both the Grade 3 and the Grade 5 bands won the Northeastern US Pipe Band
Championships on the same day.
In 2007, John was recruited to assume the Pipe Major's position from Neil Gow. By returning to the Worcester Kiltie
Pipe Band, John has truly come full-circle. It was with the Kilties, under Pipe Major James Kerr, that John
experienced his first pipe band competitions. He is looking forward to carrying on the Kiltie's award-winning
tradition.
